Blakes Estate Vineyard & Winery - Wine
Blakes Estate, at Deans Marsh in the foothills of the Otway Ranges, specializes in growing Pinot Noir vines. Lying within the Geelong wine region of western Victoria, the winery is situated only 16km from the coastal town of Lorne and the Great Ocean Road. The close proximity to the coast ensures a warm summer and a long, dry Autumn with temperatures modified by the maritime influence. This climate, together with the light, sandy, Tertiary aged Otway soils are perfect for growing their Pinot Noir vines.
Attention to detail and their small acreage enable Blakes Estate to make a first class Pinot Noir, rich in fruit flavours with a satisfying middle palate and a long finish. The wines are matured in fine French oak barriques for up to 12 months and kept in the bottle for a further year prior to release.
The vines are hand pruned, the grapes hand picked and the "Reserve" pinot is made with a wild yeast ferment in the authentic French "Burgundian style", the area of origin of the pinot grape.
Blakes Estate also make a "Blanc de Noir" sparkling wine from pinot grapes grown in their own vineyard. Prior to disgorging, the wine has spent two years undergoing secondary fermentation and maturing with resulting typical yeast flavours, a hint of strawberry and a satisfying full mouth feel and long dry finish.
In 2006, Blakes Estate made a small volume of Rosé to compliment the other wines. The Rosé is made from lightly pressed grapes and free run juice giving a medium bodied Rosé style with an intense flavour and bouquet. Served lightly chilled it is an ideal Summer wine.
Cellar Door is open weekends, January and Public Holidays between 11am and 5pm, or by appointment.
